[Workshop] Talking the Talk Grassroots Workshop

Feb 4 2006 - 1:00pm
Feb 4 2006 - 5:00pm

Event Description:

Building a majority, issue by issue", The Billie Carr Institute

Featured presentations and discussions

  • Voter surveys: Drs. Bob Stein, Stephen Klineberg, Richard Murray
  • Discussion panels about environmental and education issues
  • Candidates Bob Gammage (Gov.) and Nick Lampson (US House) & more

Targeted to activists, political club members and those newly involved in the political process, this workshop focuses on quality of life issues such as environment and education which are important to Democratic and independent voters in suburban and urban area campaigns.

To win elections in our region, Democrats need to communicate about issues important to Democrats as well as a segment of "independent" voters. We can't just shout at George W. Bush and complain about Tom DeLay, we need to speak intelligently about issues that a majority of voters care about.  That is what this conference is all about.

This event features briefings from the top survey research experts in the Houston region, discussions about key quality of life issues, and a special time for activists and volunteers to meet candidates.

Harris County AFL-CIO Council, December 10th International Human Rights Day - STREET HEAT Day of Action to Restore Workers’ Freedom to Form Unions and Bargain Collectively

  • Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), Local 582
  • TWU’s School Bus Drivers in Cy-Fair ISD and Humble ISD

Let’s Stand with these Workers!

Continental Airlines’ Fleet Service Workers and the Bus Drivers of Cy-Fair and Humble ISD want a Union.  The Transportation Workers Union and these Workers need our support.

December 10th is International Human Rights Day and is our National Day of Action to Restore Workers’ Freedom to Form Unions and Bargain Collectively.  Our Houston event in support of TWU will be just one of many events held across the country by workers and their Unions.  The Employee Free Choice Act that is now before Congress will protect workers who want to form a union and bargain a contract with their employer.  Unfortunately, under our present labor laws 25% of workers are fired for doing so or threatened with a plant closing and 1/3 never achieve first contact.

We need to turn out on Saturday, December 10th (you will be voting in the run-off on that same day) at 10:00 a.m. at the Mickey Leland Federal Bldg, 1919 Smith St., Downtown Houston, Wear your Union colors and bring your Union banners.  Show your support for workers.
