[PAA-Webteam] Attachments in e-mail lists
We seem to have an ongoing problem with attachments sent with
messages to our e-mail lists. It's easy for people to do, and it
works OK for most recipients, but it does cause problems for some
people. We had problems with this with our old lists, too (before we
moved them over to our new domain). I figure that for every
complaint that someone sends to me, there are at least several others
who may have a problem but who don't complain. Sometimes they just
drop off of the list.
So, what would it take to do the following:
1. Write up a FAQ on why you shouldn't send attachments to our
e-mail lists (I'll be glad to do this and the rest of you can
edit/add more)
2. Include in the FAQ, and in an e-mail we send to our discuss list
occasionally, what to do if you want everyone to see the latest
cartoon or favorite photo or MS Word doc or Powerpoint presentation,
etc.
2a. When we can implement it, this can be how to upload your file
yourself to our photo gallery or downloads pages so everyone can see
it.
2b. Until we can figure out how to let everyone log in to our web
site and do 2a, we can have a single e-mail address (maybe just the
PAA webteam) to which people can send files they want everyone to be
able to see.
3. Write a standard message we can send to people when our list
server intercepts the messages they sent to the list with an
attachment, (referring them to the FAQ so they'll know why they
shouldn't do it) and what to do to let everyone see the file (2a or
2b). I'll be glad to help write this once we figure out what we want
them to do.
I don't want to discourage people sharing the latest cute political
cartoon or photo with everyone, but I'd like to have a way
(preferably easy) of doing it that doesn't cause problems for other
people.
