PAA Resolutions Committee meeting
A reminder, as we discussed at the PAA meeting last week and on this list:
The PAA resolutions committee will meet tonight to go over the
resolutions that we wrote for the Texas Democratic Convention 2 years
ago (and since then), to see which ones need to be revised/updated,
which ones need to be combined, and what new ones need to be written.
Resolutions are an important way to educate the public and candidates
about issues, and to identify fellow progressives who we want to
encourage to come to the conventions (to help elect more progressives
to leadership positions in the party). And they become the basis for
the party platform.
We'll also work on candidate questionnaires -- probably one for US
Congressional candidates based on national issues of our resolutions,
and a separate questionnaire for Texas legislature and other state
candidates.
The people who previously volunteered for this committee already know
about the meeting, but any of the rest of you are welcome to join us,
too. If you can't come tonight but would like to help during the
next week or so, let me know. Most of the work on
revising/writing/editing resolutions and the questionnaires will be
done at home and by e-mail. So it will be easy for you to help.
You can find the resolutions from 2 years ago, and a few new ones
written since then, at http://www.paa-tx.org/about -- scroll down to
the bottom of the page.
Possible new resolutions (mostly on state issues) include ones on:
*Withdraw from Iraq NOW
*Instant runoff voting
*Reduce state property tax/implement income tax
*Texas public school finance
*Strengthen public education (no vouchers, less testing)
*Restore funding to CHIP, MHMR, and other social services
*State minimum wage/fair wage law
*End the death penalty
*Change Dem. party rules so Resolutions & Platform committees can
meet before state convention
*other suggestions?
The meeting will be at:
Daily Grind coffee house/restaurant
4115 Washington Ave., west of Heights Blvd.
Houston 77007
713-861-4558
They have wi-fi.
We'll start about 6 pm, and probably go until about 9 pm.
Again, let me know ASAP if you'd like to help, and with which
resolution or candidate questionnaire, if you can't come to the
meeting tonight. Which additional resolutions we write will depend
primarily on getting volunteers to write them.
If you'd like to help revise or write a resolution, please refer to
the resolution writing guidelines at http://www.paa-tx.org/node/1014
