Sign Making Party!

Event Description:

Let's party!  Let's tell the world that change is in the air!  Let's make signs!

I have a 1st Amendment, and I plan to use it before it's completely taken away.  How about you?

Join us for a fun and productive afternoon this Saturday.  As we discussed at our last Progressive Action Alliance meeting, we're having a sign making party, for everyone who wants to do freeway blogging, for those needing a sign to bring to next Tuesday's mis-Statements of the Union protest, for sidewalk demonstrations, or for anything else for which you need a political sign.

We'll be making signs & banners that say "Impeach", "Stop Torture", "Stop Illegal Spying",  "Out of Iraq NOW", or whatever else you want. We'll make BIG signs that will be seen by thousands.  We'll also talk about how to safely put signs in a public spaces.

The Freeway Blogger web site has lots of great examples, with photos of some of the hundreds and hundreds of signs that have been placed on freeway overpasses and other visible locations in all 50 states. Lots of individuals are doing this on their own.  It doesn't take much time, it's fun, and it gets noticed.

An example of a sign that was on a bridge over Allen Parkway here in Houston for over a week, earlier this month.

The simple procedure is documented here.

Everyone is invited to help us make signs, so feel free to forward this to others who may believe in the 1st Amendment.

Bring:
-------

    • LARGE cardboard, old sheets, old political yard signs, or anything large, lightweight, & paintable
    • 2"-4" Paint brushes or spray paint if you have them
    • Ideas on what the signs should say & where they might be placed
    • Good vibes, a smile, photos of signs you've seen
    • Something to share for dinner if you want to stay afterwards (or money for something to be delivered)
    • I do NOT encourage you to say whether or where you plan to personally put signs.  Surprises are best!

Regarding size of cardboard needed - the bigger the better.  We want lots of people to see them.  Go by your favorite dumpster or ask at an appliance store for large boxes.  Fold them parallel to the corrugations if needed, to fit into your car.  We can duct tape smaller cardboard pieces together.  Old sheets make great signs, too.

We'll have some some cans of paint and a few paint brushes, but a few more brushes would help.

If you'd like to stay while the signs are drying, join us in a pot-luck dinner and/or we can order pizza or Chinese food.

Thanks. I hope to see you all on Saturday!
