Paul Loeb speaks on the "Soul of a Citizen" & "The Impossible Will Take a Little While"
Event Description:
Noted author Paul Loeb is coming to Houston, and we've arranged for him to give a special presentation for us. This is something you should not miss!
Some excerpts from his web site:
Paul Loeb is a noted speaker and author of books on citizen activism, including "Soul of a Citizen" and "The Impossible Will Take a Little While". Both of these are underground bestsellers with a combined 160,000 copies in print. He has also written and published several other books.
David Duemler, of the Oregon Peace Festival, said, ”Paul’s presentation was a highlight of our Oregon Peace Festival. He received a standing ovation from an audience of 500 people. People were so inspired that since the talk I have repeatedly heard people referring to points he made. It is this type of inspiration that can help us build strong and effective coalitions.”
Bill Moyers wrote of Loeb's writing, “This book can even make one hopeful about the future despite so many signs to the contrary."
Kevin Danaher, cofounder of Global Exchange, said, "Just what the doctor ordered for these depressing times: a massive infusion of hope, written in the clearest and most inspiring prose. Do your soul a favor and read this book."
There are many other similarly positive reviews about Loeb's talks and about his writing.
The talks he gives draw on his Soul of a Citizen book, his three earlier books, and on his 30 years of exploring citizen involvement, and on his latest book on political hope, "The Impossible Will Take a Little While", named the #3 political book of 2004 by the History Channel and the American Book Association, and winner of the Nautilus Award for best social change book.
He focuses on how ordinary citizens can make their voices heard and actions count in a time when we're told neither matter. He talks of how people get involved in larger community issues and what stops them from getting involved; how they burn out in exhaustion or maintain their commitment for the long haul; how involvement can give them a sense of connection and purpose rare in purely personal life. It should be perfect to get us charged up and inspired, to help us enlist more people in our important work, and also to keep us going for the long haul.
Between his five books he has been a keynoter or featured speaker at numerous national conferences, including the American Society on Aging, National Education Association, Education Commission of the States, National Youth Leadership Council, National Student Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness, major environmental conferences, the Unitarian General Assembly, the corporate meeting of Patagonia corporation, the national hunger action group Results, and educational gatherings of college presidents, provosts and Deans. He's also done lots of major regional gatherings to peace, social justice, labor and community groups. Responses have been consistently terrific.

Metro bus route 40 goes directly by the church, and number 48 goes within walking distance.

then select bus route 40 or 48 to get the schedule and route map for those bus routes.
Loeb will talk for about 45 minutes starting at 7 pm, and have another 45 minutes or however long is needed for questions and answers.
He'll also bring his books to sell, for those who want one. He says he likes talking with people afterwards, too.
