'Ground Noise and Static' Screening - Sat, Dec 6th
Event Description:
As part of its monthly film series, Houston Indymedia will screen "Ground Noise and Static: Free Speech Under Attack at the RNC" at 7:00pm Saturday, December 6th at Rice Cinema.
This documentary, by subMedia TV and PepperSpray Productions, is a 30 minute video report on the demonstrations that were held outside the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. The filmmakers went there not to report on either party's convention, but to cover the creative actions that were taking place outside which the corporate media would all but ignore. The film contains from-the-streets footage capturing protests from both conventions, and arrests made at the RNC. "Don't be diverted by the ground noise and static..." is the phrase John McCain used to dismiss the protesters who shouted out during his acceptance speech.
From the producers: "Ground Noise & Static is a manifesto. We went to Denver and St. Paul to take the pulse of the movement. Corporate media would cover the platitudes and posturing of the politicians, we were interested in something else, a story hidden in plain sight, captured in the now-classic street chant, 'This is what democracy looks like.'"
After the film, we will be joined by activists from Houston who traveled to the RNC. Come show them your support as they talk about what they experienced there, their being subpoenaed by a Federal Grand Jury and their feelings of victory after having those subpoenas dropped.
We will be asking for donations at the door, however no one will be turned away.
Rice Cinema is located at Rice University, Entrance #8 (University & Stockton).
