Event Description:

You are invited to participate in a week-long memorial to the 2000th US military casualty of the Iraq war, in the Heights in Houston.  It will begin the Saturday after the announced 2000th US casualty of the Iraq war, with a ceremony each evening sponsored by a different group, and ending the following Saturday (one week later) with a larger ceremony.

American flags and about 170 Texas flags will be installed in the esplanade of Heights Boulevard between 10th and 11th Street followed by an evening ceremony.

Each of the following evenings there will be a ceremony held by co-sponsoring groups, during which additional flags will be planted, if necessary.

Schedule of events:

  • Oct. 29 Sat. 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Opening Ceremony
  • Oct. 30 Sun. 6 to 6:30 p.m. sunset memorial hosted by North Houston Peace Group
  • Oct. 31 Mon. 6 to 6:30 p.m. sunset memorial hosted by Progressive Populist Caucus
  • Nov. 1 Tues. 6 to 6:30 p.m. sunset memorial hosted by Veterans for Peace
  • Nov. 2 Wed. 6 to 6:30 p.m. sunset memorial hosted by the Progressive Action Alliance and the Dept. of Peace group -
    PAA & the Department of Peace group are planning a candlelight vigil, with remarks by Gold Star mom Amy Brenham whose son was killed in Iraq last year, followed by a walking meditation.

  • Nov. 4 Fri. 6 to 6:30 p.m. sunset memorial hosted by 1st Unitarian Universalists
  • Nov. 5 Sat. 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Closing Ceremony
