Scott Parkin with Houston Global Awareness spoke about Halliburton Protest Wed., May 18 Note: PAA endorsed the HGA May 18 Halliburton Protest via email consensus earlier Requested PAA participation in town hall meeting at Mecca on Thursday, 4-21 and direct action training. Scott Parkin noted that May 18th action is modeled on “People Power Strategy” Checkout website: www.peoplepowerstrategy.org Discussion about lobbying state legislature for voting paper trail; and Lobbying city council for verifiable voting in local elections PAA moved and passed endorsement of Verifiable Voting Coalition petitions PAA sub-committee formed (Don Cook; Bill Crosier; C. Lee Taylor; Rochelle Brackman; JoAnn Wolf) – suggested that we write a resolution for city council and post to PAA website for other townships to use as needed; stress non-partisan dimension and encourage broad range of participation, support. Proposed actions:
- Require recruitment centers present full spectrum of information about military life and invasion/occupation Iraq; Margaret Davis to Chair committee
- Raise public awareness of how mainstream media coverage fails to inform the public substantively on matters that have grave public affect
- Promote the teaching of the Constitution’s Preamble: "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Tabled for lack of time
- Stage demonstration at Fox 26 on media coverage and failure of media to provide substantive news (Fox being the poster child of unbalanced reporting) and through press releases etc. to rival stations ensure mainstream coverage of event Charlie Lindahl & Bill Crosier to chair committee
- Peak Oil Mini-Conference: Saturday, July 9; Next planning meeting at West Gray Café Wed., April 20th ; Mykonos Thursday, 4-21 Don Cook to chair committee
Internal Activities:
- Treasurer’s report: JoAnn presented and it was accepted without objection; bal. $531.94
- PAA Bylaws: tabled for lack of time
- Communications Workshop for PAA; discussed, moved and passed that Cheryl to pursue/organize
- Additional printing of INCI: moved and passed to spend up to $200 (Note: Green Party contributed another $200; Dr. Joseph Kay agreed to underwrite cost of next printing)
- HPJC Membership: moved and passed to join $25/yr
- PAA Festival/Social Forum: Heather Smith to chair committee
- PAA movie night: PAA movie night committee to continue work and results posted via email
- Candlelight vigils reinstituted: Rochelle Brackman proposed we use the left over cups and candles from Sing Peace for weekly vigils at the Mecom Fountain; discussion followed about joining with Amnesty International and another group that holds vigils at fountain. Rochelle to pursue(?)
