[PAA-Webteam] Please test this in Internet Exploder for Windows

Submitted by PAAMember on October 21, 2005 - 6:00pm. ::

All,

will someone *please* look at the page below using Internet Exploder
for Windows and tell me if there is a banner up at the top for No
Nonsense in November?

http://staging.paa-tx.org/

I'd like someone to view it using IE 5 and IE 6 if possible - please
reply.
thx,

Sarah et al:

Looks OK on my read of it too (IE6 under XP/Home).

As to the script warnings: there is a special HTML sequence (comment, actually) called the "Mark Of The Web" ( I kid you not )) that suppresses the
script warning(s).

Do a google search of this for details.

ah - thx for the details Bill.

YaH - this is more than just a banner at the top - there are scripts
behind the scenes that

* track how many times the banner has been clicked on
* part of the script will randomize the display of banners if
there is more than one
* tools to automatically turn the banners on / off after a
specified time

all these features are really nice, but not really necessary for our
purposes. We'll have to leave this as is for now until something
better comes along unless you think the script error is too annoying
or whatever. I really just wanted to have the ability to place
*headline* items at the TOP of the page and make them stay there.

The way things work right now - as people post content, if the
content is elevated to the first page, it lists them by date so that
older content automatically gets pushed down to the bottom - you can
make an item "sticky" meaning it "sticks" to the top, but once the
maximum # of posts is reached on the front page, it'll automatically
file older content off the front page - I was just trying to keep
that from happening.

if you think the scripts prompts are show stoppers, we'll have to
deal with placing important stuff in the left or right blocks for
now, thoughts?
thx,

Looks OK with IE 6 running under Win XP, but ONLY IF scripts are
enabled. (I have IE to prompt me my default before running any of
them or Active X, and if I answer no, then the No Nonsense banner is
NOT displayed, but if I answer yes to scripts then it is displayed.)
I don't have IE 5 for Windoze so didn't test it.

I tried IE 5 with my old Mac running OS 9.1 and got the same results
as above -- the banner displayed OK when I have scripts enabled (as I
usually do for my Mac) but it did not display if scripts were
disabled. (There are some other peculiarities with the new web site
with that old browser as I've mentioned previously.)

Yeah, I was wondering why you were using a script to just put a
graphic with a link there. I guess it will be nice to be able to
keep specified items at the top of the page (until they no longer
apply or until we're tired of them). Just curious, though -- why do
you need a script to keep it at the top of the page?

I think it's OK. I only had the problem with Internet Explorer with
scripts disabled. it worked OK with Safari and Firefox, and with IE
when scripts are enabled. I realize that a lot of people use IE, but
I'll bet that most of them leave scripts enabled or don't even know
how or why to disable them. I think it's more important to disable
Active-X with IE for security reasons than scripts, but if you aren't
using A-X then we should be OK. And most IE users probably don't
even realize they should be careful in enabling Active-X, even though
I believe the default for IE is to enable both scripting and A-X.
